BELOW IS A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WILLIAM L GILBERT CLOCK CO.

                       THE WILLIAM L. GILBERT CLOCK COMPANY

WILLIAM LEWIS GILBERT BEGAN A LIFE LONG CAREER IN THE CLOCK MAKING BUSINESS WHEN HE PURCHASED A CLOCK SHOP WITH HIS BROTHER-IN -LAW GEORGE MARSH, IN DECEMBER OF 1828 THE FIRM OF MARSH GILBERT & COMPANY WAS ACTIVE IN BRISTOL AND FARMINGTON CON. UNTIL ABOUT 1834 WHEN IT MOVED TO DAYTON OHIO AND BEGAN MARKETING WOOD CLOCKS. RETURNING TO BRISTOL ABOUT 1835 GILBERT FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH JOHN BIRGE IN THE FIRM BIRGE , GILBERT & COMPANY MARKETED EMPIRE CASED SHELF CLOCKS WITH JOSEPH IVES PATENT MOVEMENTS. THE FIRM WAS DISSOLVED ABOUT 1837 WHEN GILBERT WENT INTO PARTNERSHIP WITH CHAUNCEY AND NOBLE JEROME AND ZELOTAS GRANT IN 1839 AS JEROME GRANT GILBERT & COMPANY MANUFACTURED JEROMES CHEAP BRASS MOVEMENT CLOCKS. LATER GILBERT MOVED TO WINCHESTER CONNECTICUT WHERE WITH LUCIUS CLARKE.

CLARKE GILBERT & CO WINCHESTER CON OCT 29TH 1841 LUCIUS CLARKE & WILLIAM GILBERT ALONG WITH EZRA BALDWIN PURCHASED A CLOCK FACTORY FROM THE WIDOW OF RILEY WHITING THE MEN FORMED CLARKE ; GILBERT & CO. WINCHESTER CON FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THE CHEAP BRASS CLOCKS KNOWEN TODAY AS OG CLOCKS IN 1845 CLARKE SOLD OUT HIS INTERESTS TO GILBERT. WHO CONTINUED AS W. L. GILBERT & COMPANY IN 1848 CLARKE PURCHASED HIS INTREST AND THE TWO MEN CONTINUED UNTIL 1851 AS GILBERT & CLARKE. IN 1851 THE FIRM AGAIN BECOME KNOWN AS W. L. GILBERT & COMPANY AND IN 1866 A JOINT STOCK COMPANY THE GILBERT MANUFACTURING COMPANY WAS FORMED IT CONTINUED IN BUSINESS UNTILL APRIL 2 1871 WHEN THE INTIRE WINSTED FACTORY BURNED. ON JULY 5 1871 A NEW CORPORATION KNOWN AS THE WILLIAM LO. GILBERT CLOCK COMPANY WAS FORMED AND A MONTH LATER CONSTRUCTION WAS BEGUN ON TWO FOUR STORY BRICK BUILDINGS . THE BUSINESS EXPANDED AND EXPERIENCED SUCCESSFUL GROWTH UNDER THE GENERAL MANAGERSHIP OF GEORGE B. OWEN.

OWEN CAME TO WINSTED CON. ABOUT 1880 AND SERVED AS MANAGER FOR ABOUT TWENTY YEARS . A TALENTED CASE DESIGNER OWEN CONDUCTED A SEPARATE BUSINESS UNDER HIS OWN NAME IN BOTH WINSTED AND NEW YORK FOR MANY YEARS. DURING THE FIRST DECADE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY SEVERAL BUILDINGS WERE ADDED, BUT THE RECESSION OF 1907 SERIOUSLY HURT THE BUSINESS, IN 1914 ITS CREDITORS ALLOWED THE COMPANY TO STAY IN BUSINESS. ITS GENERAL MANAGER WAS ABLE TO PUT THE COMPANY BACK IN PROFITABLE AND ALL DEBTS WERE PAID BY 1925. THE 1929 DEPRESSION THE COMPANY WAS FORCED INTO RECEIVERSHIP IN 1932 THE E. INGRAHAM CLOCK COMPANY WANTED TO BUY GILBERTíS INTIRE BUSINESS AND ATTEMPTED TO DO IT WITH THE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WESTERN CLOCK COMPANY OF LA SALLE ILLINOIS BUT DID NOT PULL IT OFF AND THE COMPANY WAS ABLE TO TERMINATE THE RECEIVERSHIP AFTER TWO YEARS AND CHANGED THE TO WILLIAM L. GILBERT CLOCK CORPORATION. FINA NAME NCIAL PROBLEMS CONTINUED TO PLAGUE THE COMPANY AFTER THE WAR. IN 1953 IT BEGAN TO MANUFACTURE ADDING MACHINES IN A EFFORT TO STIMULATE PROFITS. IN 1957 THE COMPANY WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE GENERAL COMPUTING MACHINE COMPANY THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO GENERAL-GILBERT CORPORATION. ON DECEMBER 23TH 1964 THE CLOCK DIVISION OF THE CORPORATION WHICH HAD NOT MADE A PROFIT IN THIRTEEN YEARS WAS SOLD TO THE SPARTUS CORPORATION OF CHICAGO ILL FOR FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS.
